What Is DALMAC®?
The nationally known Dick Allen Lansing to MACkinaw Bicycle Tour was originated in 1971 by then State Representative Dick Allen of Ithaca. The objectives of DALMAC are to develop an awareness of bicycling and its needs among the citizens of Michigan, to promote bicycling as a healthy means of transportation and recreation, and to encourage wider participation in bicycle use. DALMAC staff & crew are almost exclusively volunteers from the Tri-County Bicycle Association(TCBA), DALMAC's only sponsor. Most of any surplus funds go to the DALMAC Fund which has distributed over $1 Million to bicycling related projects throughout Michigan. All routes begin at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing and follow country roads whenever possible to attempt to provide the safest, most scenic routes between campgrounds. The routes end in Mackinaw City, St Ignace, or Rudyard.
Who Can Ride?
DALMAC is organized as a supported camping tour. The support is in the form of camping space, restrooms and showers at community schools, cafeteria meals at the campsites, trucks that carry baggage to/from each campsite, and "SAG" vehicles to provide assistance.
In recent years, approximately 1500 riders have enjoyed meeting the challenges involved with bicycling 70 to 100 miles each day.
